Tarot has been my cheat code for life. It's a powerful contemplative tool. I couldn't have healed without it.
Through beautiful synchronicity, I received a Rider-Waite Tarot deck at the age of thirteen. My grandmother (who didn’t read cards) gave me the deck. Her pastor had told her to never ever get a Tarot reading. Being the free-thinking seeker and ornery asshole that she was, she signed up for a Tarot class, found it underwhelming, and, since I was very interested in spirituality and religions, one day she gave me the little deck that she bought for that class. Her act of defiance brought me into contact with the handbook for surviving my life--it's my language for speaking with the universe. I love this language from the depths of my nerd-scholar-linguist heart.
From observing the natural cycles of the seasons, days, and human life cycle, people across time, culture, and space have crafted stories with similar structures. Joseph Campbell would later identify the deep structure underlying these stories as the monomyth–i.e. the hero’s journey. Many of these myths tell of a G*d-(Wo)Man leaving home (Fall) descending into the underworld for a time (Winter) where they face challenges and gather knowledge, treasures, and true love. After facing challenges, riddles, and obstacles, the hero emerges victorious, defying the confines of death through rebirth (Spring). and returns home a re-made being, gifts in tow (Summer).
Each of the five sections of the deck depict a chopped-up hero's journey related to one of the five elements. The Major Arcana depicts how we master the element of spirit while each of the four suits of the Minor Arcana capture how to master one of the more mundane elements: Earth (pentacles/coins, Air (Swords, Water (Cups), and Fire (Wands). Through the challenges and triumphs and everyday moments of life, we have opportunities to master all of the elements, becoming the hero that returns home enriched by the journey. By combining order (its highly structured sign system) with chaos (the randomness of the shuffle) the two sections of the deck function as a microcosm of the human experience of time, space, and spiritual transcendence.
My Tarot readings are always about one's spiritual path. They reveal what needs to be known in order for you to become the most evolved, true version of yourself. Though you may choose to ask about a specific subject/issue (either verbally or silently) information and guidance about more Earthly matters and/or direct answers to "yes or no" questions may or may not arise.
